The sunlight came in through the blinds. It was a tawny orange, and it illuminated the
dust that hung in the air. Someone must
have recently cleaned the chalkboard. The
light came down on her eyes. She could
feel the setting sun’s heat through her closed eyelids. It honestly would have felt nice if she had
been bathing in the sunlight, and not just blinded by it.
She opened her eyes, squinting against the light. She blinked rapidly, sitting up slowly. As soon as the light was out of her eyes she
could see again. No one was around, the
classroom was empty. She stifled a yawn,
her hand covering her mouth.
She was so tired, even after her afternoon nap. But if she went back to bed now she would
have to walk home in the dark. Grudgingly,
she stood up, stretching her arms high above her head. She reached into her bag and brought out a
sports bottle. She popped the top and
squeezed the water into her mouth.
God that felt good.
She put her bag on, and picked up her jacket. She folded it, holding it in her arms. She left the room and no one was there
outside the classroom. No one met her in
the hallways. No one met her when she
exited the building.
Outside it was still warm, unlike how it had been cold that
morning. She sighed, closing her eyes
and standing still for a moment. It was
beautifully silent out. She stayed like
that for a few moments, breathing in the fresh air.
It was time to go home.
